Wrenwhisper had never had her limbs ache as badly as they did when she finally stumbled back into camp, a few steps behind the rest of the patrol. If anything she felt her age; muscles tight and aching with disuse, and a quiver to her form that she couldn't shake. There was no way around it, a second day in a row of patrol after patrol had her about ready to fall down. Especially paired with her lack of sleep. The she-cat let out a slow, long breath, trying to compose herself against the tugging at her eyes, ears flicked back slightly as she slowly moved to the edge of the camp. Being a warrior was all she'd ever wanted, yet now she had to admit it was overwhelming her. Everything she'd forgotten, her lack of physical development, the experience she should have had with age all but absent. StarClan, she just wanted to get it right, to serve the clan as she'd always wanted to. Wrenwhisper squeezed her eyes shut and took a long, shaky breath. After a moment she exhaled, trying to focus on the world around her. The same way she'd taught her kits. She could feel the soil under her paws, the way her claws rested in it. She could feel the breeze against her pelt and the chill from the setting sun's shadows. She could smell the fresh kill pile, and all those around her. She just needed time. It would come. Viperstar was concerned. He was a young leader and a lot of his warriors didn't believe he was going to make a good one. He was curled up in his nest for the moment, having been on his feet all day, and he was deep in thought over how to prove himself a good leader. Not to mention he had to prove it to himself as well.

Perhaps he had to prove himself by unifying the clan once more. Otherwise, Windclan would tear itself apart. Viperstar needed to unify his clan. Maybe to find a way to destroy Emberstar's rogues. Maybe he should ask the clan what they think they should do. Maybe he should ask his advisors. Maybe, maybe, maybe. Why was leading so difficult, and why did Starclan choose him in the first place.

A sigh escaped his maw as he stood up once again and padded out of the leader's den into the open sky. His eyes swept across the clearing of their camp and landed on Wrenwhisper. His features softened as he considered her and then made his way over to her. She appeared exhausted. She'd only just recently become a warrior again, and he knew that she was struggling to push old muscles she hadn't used in moons.

"Hey Wrenwhisper." He said softly as he approached her slowly and nonthreatening. "You've been working pretty hard the past couple of sunrises. I'm really proud of you."

The moment she sat down all Wrenwhisper wanted to do was sag into the ground. Her legs barely felt strong enough to hold her up as she sat, focused on her paws for a long moment. Yet, the moment was gone all too soon, a sudden voice startling her into looking up. "Hey Wrenwhisper." Viperstar. She let out a breath and offered the tom a small smile and a dip of her head. StarClan, when had he gotten so big? "You've been working pretty hard the past couple of sunrises. I'm really proud of you."The she-cat twitched her whiskers, head ducking sheepishly. “I’m just trying to do my part,” she meowed quietly. On shaky paws she stepped forward and reached up to give the leader’s ear a few licks. “I’m the one who should be saying that to you. You’re taking on your new role well,” she purred, stepping back. Viperstar. Once a somewhat bully of a kit, encouraged by his mother. For a long time she’d watched him grow alongside her own kits and as he stood by Emberstar’s side, seemingly inactive to prevent harm beyond rumours, she’d wondered if he had truly lost his way. In some ways the concern was still there. After all, regardless of his tyrant behaviour, Viperstar had still ended his brother’s life. She knew it was still in the minds of Lichenstrike and her other kits as well. But, she’d always said to her kits to have hope for the better of others, and trust them to find their true selves. Viperstar seemed to be starting to do that without Emberstar’s presence. Rocking back on her haunckles, she stretched slightly, wincing at the tug of her stiff muscles. “How about we share a meal? He watched her carefully. His thoughts racing in his head like rabbits. Viperstar knew that at least Lichenstrike didn't like him and didn't trust him. He knew there were reservations within his clan and he wondered if Wrenwhisper was one of them. She treated him so kindly, but he wondered what her thoughts were even still.

It was sad really, just how much he mistrusted his clan when he was expecting his clan to trust him. It was all backwards and definitely something to think about. He'd barely started to trust Alderstone, Redelm, and Juniperblaze, and now he was expecting an entire clan to trust him. Maybe, the way to unify them was to find the strength and the courage to trust them as well, as difficult and backbreaking as that would be.

Her soft words and affectionate licks upon his ear were comforting with a hint of suspicion. Viperstar laughed softly and gave his chest a few licks in embarrassment as he accepted her love. He wondered if Wrenwhisper was a great place to start. Or if his true self would be much too dark for her. What if... she didn't like who he truly was? There was a very light intake of breath as the older queen requested they share a meal together. An opportunity to test out his theory. Terror itched at his paws as he nodded with a smile. "I would love to. There is... something I would like to talk to ask you if that's alright?"

Viperstar laughed, and Wrenwhisper gave a purr of amusement, as she untangled herself from the crouch. Her muscles screamed at the action, but she bit back any noise. "I would love to. There is... something I would like to talk to ask you if that's alright?" The she-cat’s ear flicked, head tilting. “Of course, sweetheart. Hang on, let me get us something to share,” She meowed, flicking her tail against the leader’s shoulder as she padded forward. Her limbs were stiff, and her movements hobbled as she made her way to the fresh kill pile. Thankfully, there were plenty of large rabbits, and she reached down to grasp one in her jaws. The scent of it rushed across her glands, earning a growl from her stomach in return. StarClan, when was the last time she’d eaten. Shuffling back over, Wrenwhisper studied Viperstar with warm eye, placing the rabbit in front of him and taking a seat by his side. She would have been daft to not be concerned by his sudden inquiry – of wanting to speak to her. But she refused to show it, instead finally relaxing into the soil and nudging the rabbit to Viperstar with a paw. “Right, then, what’s on your mind? She stood and went to the freshkill pile and grabbed a well-sized rabbit and brought it back to him and they settled down beside each other. His paws itched, his ears flicked in discomfort. He was afraid. What if she wasn't... He took a deep breath and glanced at her with a nervous gaze. "Wrenwhisper, you've always been kind to me, even when I was a bully to my younger half-brother. And you've always supported me. Especially when I was under the care of Swiftfoot. I really appreciate you."

There was a moment of silence as he thought about what he was going to say. At this point, his ears went back and he lowered himself into a crowch. He stared at the rabbit at his paws and then sighed. "I've done a lot to survive what I've been through. Honestly, I thought there would never be an end for me except death. But death never came..." his voice cracked for a moment and his eyes drifted back to Wrenwhisper's. "I don't know if my actions were the right way to go about taking down my brother, but despite my mistakes in the past I want to do right by my clan. If I could ask, how could I improve my leadership? How could I help you to feel safer in your warrior duties as well as unify the rest of the clan?"

It wasn't a fun question to ask. It meant forcing himself to change his behavior and the way he did things. It meant having to look at himself through the eyes of someone else. But he had to ask. He had to get this out there. He had to start trusting his clanmates. He had to earn the trust of his clanmates. Otherwise, his leadership was void, and it was only a matter of time before someone challenged his position. He had to start growing. He was still young and learning. Being Leader so young was not ideal, but here he was.

The more she settled into the ground, the more the aches settled in, enough that she struggled to focus on Viperstar’s words as she took a careful bite. A frown settled itself across her face, discomfort spreading across her fur. Was his experiences really any worse than those that had been taken from them? After listening to her Viperstar sighed softly. That wasn't exactly what he wanted to hear, but it was better than nothing. What did he need to do? There was a moment of silence from him as he thought about what he should say next. His eyes traveled to his companion and a gentle smile set itself on his maw. "Sorry for being a bit cryptic. So... you look like you're in a lot of pain after coming back from a patrol. Is there anything I can do to help? Maybe I could train with you to help refresh your memory and your muscles a bit? Or ask Gophergaze about some herbs that may help?"
