He was up unusually early- at least for him. Lichenstrike didn’t really know what to do with himself, as he waited at the edge of camp, watching the sun sleepily creep over the horizon as his paws kneaded the loamy soil underfoot. It was a special morning. He wasn’t sure if this was Viperstar’s way of trying to appease him, or if it was simply bound to happen given the number of siblings he had within the Clan. But the fact of the matter was, he was assigned to be Nightingalepaw’s mentor.[break][break]

He was proud and pleased and terrified. Proud of both his younger sister and himself, pleased because he could think of no other apprentice he’d rather have. [break][break]

Terrified that he’d do something wrong. That he would misstep and get Nightingalepaw in trouble- or worse. It was one thing for him to make a scene and run off when it was only his own pride and his own well-being at stake. The last thing he wanted was for anything to happen to Nightingalepaw.[break][break]

Maybe that was something he ought to ask Wrenwhisper about. How to be responsible for something as precious as a loved one and not manage to screw everything up. But for now, he thought to himself, he had a training session to conduct. Their first training session together. A simple tour around the territory – even he couldn’t manage to mess that up. [break][break]

When the sun was suitably high in the sky, Lichenstrike turned back towards the center of camp. This time, there was a smile on his lips.[break][break]

“Nightingalepaw!” The tom called brightly, weaving his way around a clowder of dozing apprentices until he found her small tabby form. He leaned down to give her an affectionate rasp of his tongue over her ears. “Ready to go? We’ve got an exciting day ahead of us.”

even though nightingalepaw was awake, she didn't dare move from her spot. she lay comfortably nestled between her sisters, and she feared even the slightest movement would disturb them. but also... she was just nervous, plain and simple. it was strange to be sleeping out in the open for the first time, rather than in the somewhat more sheltered nursery surrounded by her siblings and her mother. she was surrounded by fellow apprentices now, sure, but it just wasn't quite the same. she wasn't a kit anymore, she knew that-- but it scared her nonetheless. it was at least a bit of a relief when her mentor would turn out to be one of her older siblings. it was slightly more comforting that her mentor would be someone at least somewhat familiar to her, rather than a complete stranger.[break][break]

she closed her eyes, willing her heart to stop racing. she didn't know why she was so nervous and she couldn't explain it well-- she just was. maybe she was afraid of failing, afraid of embarrassing her family, afraid of not being capable. "nightingalepaw!" her small form jerked slightly in alarm, eyes flying open as lichenstrike's voice called for her. for a moment she was overcome with a wave of anxiety and dread, but the warm rasp of the tom's tongue on her ears helped ease some of those nerves. "ready to go? we’ve got an exciting day ahead of us." this was only her first day, and as such it wouldn't be too strenuous. holding onto that thought, she gave a small hum of acknowledgement and slowly pushed herself to her paws.[break][break]

taking extra care not to disturb the other apprentices, she separated from the group, pausing for a moment to glance up at the sky. had she really slept that long? "i-i'm ready." she mewed, standing up straight and facing her mentor with a shy smile. she didn't really know any of her older siblings as well, but she supposed this would be a good way to get to know at least one of them.
