She was pacing in front of the nursery, restless beyond belief. It wasn't like her belly was full yet, and even so, Yellowstar insisted that she stay in camp until the kits were born. But going from working hard as a warrior to doing nothing but waiting for her kits to arrive was difficult. She was used to doing her warrior duties. And part of her even missed it. She found it endearing that her mate was so excited and wanted to protect her as much as he could, but keeping her in camp was not helping her mood.

Dovecloud knew she was emotional, knew that she should calm down and probably go get a good long drink of water, or maybe a dip in the river would help her. Shifty eyes searched for Yellowstar, but he was nowhere to be found. Hopefully, he was on patrol and wouldn't be back for some time. Perhaps she could take some time to go to the river and relax. With a sigh she trotted toward the camp entrance. No one would stop her, she was the leader's mate for Starclan's sake. And yet that didn't help make her feel any less guilty.

having kits was an experience violetdawn could never quite understand desiring.
the very thought of having them writhing around in her belly made her shudder. was it not already bad enough to punish oneself by having a bad meal, and made restless all night like as one's stomach twisted and turned? was there something pleasant about having one's innards and entrails pushed aside to make room for ungrateful brats that would go on to never quite realize just how much one had done for them? and to be cooped up in the nursery for just a little over six moons, helpless and expecting the clan to fawn over you just because you'd done what thousands of cats had done before and brought new life into the world. no, she could never imagine that life for herself.
besides. it wasn't as though her own kithood was quite pleasant. her mother had despised violetdawn and wheatwhisker for having the nerve to be born breathing, and had moaned and complained for every moon they weaned on her until finally, finally she escaped the nursery once they were steadily eating solids. in a way, she couldn't blame her mother for that much - how unpleasant it must have been, surrounding by wailing, needy kits.
it was why she walked past the nursery, then, with a wrinkled nose. there was nothing but unsavory memories for her in there, and while her brother, wheatwhisker, seemed eager to have kits of his own one day, she couldn't imagine a worse nightmare. kits were messy, fussy, and loud. violetdawn would only ever deal with them when they were named her apprentice, and that was final. the milky scent that wafted from the den's entrance made her feel nauseous more than anything else, and she quickened her step, eager to get out of camp and put herself to better use, like going for a hunt.
not quite paying much attention, she briskly brushed past dovecloud, unable to help but shoulder her way past whatever bulk was in her way. however, when she lifted her gaze from her paws, she realized that it was a fellow warrior - yellowstar's mate.
...who carried that same milky scent on her, violetdawn noticed, whiskers twitching. she paused in her step, and stared at her for a moment, unsure of what to say. violetdawn had never been polite in the first place, but as the leader's right-paw, and dovecloud as his mate-
"...congratulations," she muttered hastily. dovecloud, she was sure, would be pleased with such a development. she was one of those more maternal-based mollies, sensitive and emotional. something violetdawn had never dealt well with.

Dovecloud was close enough to the camp entrance when someone pushed past her and caused her to stumble over her own paws. She caught herself before falling and hissed bitterly at whoever it was that decided to be so rude. But when her eyes met Violetdawn's her heart fell into her chest and ears flicked back in uncertainty. There was a moment of silence as they stared at each other awkwardly. She had always felt uncomfortable around the russet she-cat. There was a feeling in the pit of her stomach that told her something was off about her. She had never been confident over the idea of Violetdawn being Yellowstar's deputy, and maybe she should communicate that, but she knew the brown tabby respected her.

Still, when the newest deputy opened her mouth to congratulate her for the kits she now carried in her body, Dovecloud couldn't help but wonder what she really thought of the situation, and if Violetdawn had become leader instead of Yellowstar, what would she have thought of her and her kits?

Dovecloud swallowed softly and nodded. "Thanks." She muttered and then glanced at the ground before lifting her eyes up to the she-cat again. There was another awkward silence before she said, "going for a hunt? Do you mind if I come with you? I need to get out of the camp anyway." Honestly, she didn't know why she asked. The thought of creating a possible friendship came to the white molly's mind, but there was concern that the idea wasn't even possible. She didn't know why her heart always went in the relationship direction, but it spoke to her need to be a part of the clan she guessed.
