Dovecloud was out hunting when the symptoms started. She was in the middle of chasing a mouse when the pain started. Her stomach suddenly churned within her and she caught the mouse, but only barely. This was starting to get annoying honestly. She dropped to her knees and left the dead mouse on the ground as she curled up into a ball and tried to fight the sudden dizziness that she was feeling.

It felt like stars were hovering above her head as she laid there on the ground. She'd been having dizzy spells lately, but nothing this bad. Perhaps she would have to go to Nettleheart's den to see what was really wrong. Or... Maybe she should ask her mate. She knew he would appreciate the trust and the chance to dot on her, but she wondered if that would take away from Nettleheart's job too much.

But she didn't have it in her heart to shrug off Yellowstar's desires to please and take care of her. It'd always been what she'd wanted wasn't it? To have the chance to love and be loved by someone. No... She had to get back to camp and find one or the other, whoever found her first.

So she stood herself up, and promptly stumbled back down, trying to steady her sight and compose herself. Which was proving to be difficult.

Yellowstar returned from sunhigh patrols. His feet were aching, demanding rest from him. Since the battle and smaller attacks that had followed, he had been pushing himself harder than any of his warriors in the clan. He had more lives than them, it was his sole duty to use them protecting RiverClan and every cat that called their clan home.[break][break]
The large tabby paced the clearing of his camp, his yellow gaze searching for the familiar pelt of his beloved Dovecloud. He wanted nothing more than to share tongues with the she-cat who brought nothing but peace and comfort to his worried mind by just her presence alone. Since leaving his old life as a medicine cat his life had changed dramatically. Dovecloud was a welcomed change and one that he didn’t know he needed.[break][break]
His heart sank upon realizing she wasn’t in the camp. A quick check of the warrior’s den came to no avail. Anxiety gripped him, despite trying not to let intrusive thoughts control his mindset. Yellowstar hadn’t been the same since finding out their camp had been attacked by rogues while he was at the Moonstone receiving his nine lives. He would never forgive himself for not being there to protect Dovecloud and the rest of his warriors.[break][break]
Worried about the prospect of danger at his mate being out in their territory alone, he quickly turned and headed back out of camp in search of her. Yellowstar knew she was strong and capable of holding her own in battle, but that did not mean he’d ever take the risk of letting her stand alone in the face of it during these uncertain times.[break][break]
What he had found only filled him with panic and reinforced his unrealistic worries. He rushed to her side just in time for the she-cat to stumble back down. Old, buried medicine cat instincts quickly found their way surfacing again, immediately assessing the situation.[break][break]
”Dovecloud,” his mew was sharp with fear. Yellowstar peppered her with questions, hardly allowing her the chance to reassure him. ”What happened? What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

It wasn't that she was in excruciating pain or anything. She felt nauseous and lightheaded, though and even though the world was swimming around her, she could just barely make out a shape running for her. His voice was distorted but she recognized that it belonged to the love of her life. "Yellowstrike?" She muttered, forgetting the "star" part of his name. She laid back down for a few moments and shut her eyes until her sight cleared and nausea faded away.

Her breathing calmed and her heart slowed its racing and she looked up at Yellowstar concern in her eyes. "I..." She went quiet for a while, anxiety filling her as she looked down at the ground. She didn't know what to say except that she was scared and didn't know what was going on. She felt like she'd lost a lot of blood in a short amount of time even though she knew she hadn't.

"I'm scared." She finally told him, leaning into his fur to comfort the both of them. "I just feel so nauseous all the time." Her body shivered a bit, unable to sit or stand properly in her weakened condition. "Yellowstar? What's happening to me?"

The brown tabby tom stared at the form of his mate, his fur bristling in his state of panic and confusion. Dovecloud continued to lay with her eyes shut. The only form of relief Yellowstar got was from her steady breathing. She wasn’t feeling well, but perhaps it wasn’t as bad like he initially worried it was.[break][break]
”I… I’m scared,” she finally mewed, leaning into him. His brow furrowed, stroking his tail along her flank, considering all the possible causes of her ailment.[break][break]
”I just feel so nauseous all the time.” Her body trembled slightly. The tom could feel his heart clench in his chest at the sight of her struggling to sit upright in her weakened state. ”Yellowstar? What’s happening to me?”[break][break]
For a long moment he stayed silent observing her. He had spent most of his life diagnosing cats and treating their illnesses. He had seasons of experience in pinpointing what was wrong with a cat and how to cure them. That knowledge would forever be a part of him even if it was no longer his role in the clan anymore.[break][break]
”Nausea is a symptom of dehydration a lot of the time. Have you been drinking enough, my love?” He mewed softly, glancing her over. Perhaps she was pushing herself too hard for the sake of their clan just like he was.[break][break]
A look of realization suddenly crossed his face and his mouth dropped open. It couldn’t be… could it? His eyes shifted down to her stomach, looking for any slight, noticeable changes.[break][break]
”Dovecloud, how… how long did you say you were having these symptoms for?” Yellowstar mewed perplexed. His mind reflecting back to the night where they professed their love for eachother only half a moon ago.

Yellowstar's voice was comforting, even as her heart raced. She felt better now but was nervous about what was really happening. She'd been feeling lightheaded for the past quarter moon, but this time was overwhelming. This was the first time she even thought about the need to go to the medicine cat's den. She was quiet for a few moments, just listening to Yellowstar's voice. She barely heard what he'd said and didn't respond to the first question at all.

But his second question stood out as she tuned back into what he was actually saying. She looked up at him with wide uncertain eyes, his voice worrying her. She knew he used to be Riverclan's medicine cat, she knew he would know what was going on, and she almost didn't want to hear it. So for a moment, she said nothing as she stared into his eyes, looking for any kind of emotion on his face. But all she got was shock.

Her voice caught in her throat for a moment, wondering what Yellowstar was thinking. Something occurred to her as he began to peer down at her stomach, her eyes followed his and her concern turned into uncertainty. What was the tabby tom thinking? "I... for a quarter moon roughly, but this was the worst it's ever been."

For a moment they stared into each other’s eyes and Yellowstar couldn’t hear anything besides his pulse in his ears as he waited for her to confirm exactly what he was thinking. StarClan, it couldn’t be. This felt too surreal. [break][break]
"I... for a quarter moon roughly, but this was the worst it's ever been," Dovecloud mewed, only causing his own heart to beat harder in his chest. The tom’s mouth dropped open and for a moment he was frozen with shock.[break][break]
Yellowstar glanced down again, gently pressing his paw against her stomach to see if he could feel any changes. At first he didn’t know if he was imagining it, but there had been the slightest bulge to her form. With wide eyes, he raised his gaze back up to hers.[break][break]
”Dovecloud, I think you’re experiencing the early symptoms of pregnancy,” he mewed in awe, as the reality slowly started sinking in that he was going to be a father. He was more than sure of it; after all his moons as a medicine cat he was familiar with the symptoms.[break][break]
A rush of emotions flowed through him all at once, enough to break down even a strong tomcat like him. Fear, joy, anxiety, and love hit him all at the same time. He never had time to adjust to being a warrior after leaving his life as a medicine cat. Nor did he have time to adjust to being a deputy as he was quickly thrown into his position as a leader. Now, the responsibilities of fatherhood would weigh on him while he also learned how to be a leader.[break][break]
It should have overwhelmed him but he had never felt so whole. In all of his moons of life he never dreamed he’d have kits of his own. It was something he had never given a second thought to. Yellowstar was so sure it was an experience he’d never have in his life due to his role as a medicine cat.[break][break]
The large brown tabby rushed forward, sealing the space between him and his mate. He pressed his forehead against hers, giving her cheeks a few swift licks as tears fell from his eyes that he could no longer hold back. ”Dovecloud, I love you so much. We’re going to be parents! Don’t worry about a single thing, we’ll figure it out. StarClan, we’re going to have kits.”

A ton of emotions overwhelmed her and she felt like her heart was about to explode by how fast it was racing. She could hear the blood raging through her ears as she stared back at her mate. She honestly didn't know how she was supposed to feel in this situation. He was ecstatic. She felt an insane amount of anxiety and shock at the same time. It wasn't that she didn't feel happy or anything, it was mostly because all the terrible things that could happen bombarded her mind. Tears welled in her eyes as he bumped foreheads with her, his tears and happiness overcame her and she fell under the pressure.

She began to cry, her body shaking with fear and uncertainty. "What if the pregnancy goes wrong? What if I'm not a good enough mother? What if they don't like me? What if...." Her voice stopped and she leaned forward to shove her face in her mate's fur. She loved him. And if it wasn't for the anxiety that filled her stomach, then she would be very happy and excited to have kits. But her insecurity came and took over her whole body and all her emotions.

"But..." She sniffed softly into his fur. "I love and adore you and I can't wait to see you stumble around because they're playing under your paws, or touching their nose to their new mentor's or become full warriors. I can't wait to shower them with affection." She was scared, but she wanted this more than anyone could ever know. She just didn't want anything to fall apart, or to watch them die, or for her to die only to never see her kits grow. The insecurities were talking now.

His eyes brimming with emotion, he looked back down to his mate. A look of concern quickly crossed Yellowstar’s face as he could tell she wasn’t taking the news as ecstatically as him. Dovecloud almost looked… worried?[break][break]
"What if the pregnancy goes wrong? What if I'm not a good enough mother? What if they don't like me? What if...." She cried, her body trembling with fear. Before he could respond, she leaned forward and shoved her face into his fur. Yellowstar purred in response, drawing his tail around her. Her anxiety was natural, something he had witnessed in almost every new queen when she found out she was expecting.[break][break]
Before he could comfort her, Dovecloud went on, ”But… I love and adore you and I can't wait to see you stumble around because they're playing under your paws, or touching their nose to their new mentor's or become full warriors. I can't wait to shower them with affection."[break][break]
Yellowstar placed a couple more licks to the top of her head, a purr rumbling deep in his throat. He felt so happy he felt as if nothing in this world could bring him down. His heart swelled with a joy stronger than anything he’d ever known.[break][break]
”You’re going to be a wonderful mother, Dovecloud,” he reassured her. ”Don’t worry about a thing, I’ll make sure you receive nothing but the best care. I’ll keep you and the kits safe and fed. I just want you to relax and enjoy motherhood. We can transition you into the nursery and relieve you from your warrior duties going forward if you’d like?”

She loved this tom with all that she was, and so she took his words as truth and began to relax in his care. Once she was able to calm herself down, Dovecloud looked up at her mate, their eyes locking tightly. She was pregnant. She was going to have kits. She was going to be a mother. Her heart began to pound again. The blood roaring in her ears. She had always wanted kits. She had always wanted to be a mother and now she would be!

Newtfang had promised her, and promised her, and promised her that they would, but he never even touched her. He didn't want kits. At least not with her, and she would never find out why. She didn't even care why.

But Yellowstar was her everything. She knew he cared about her. He'd been everything she'd ever wanted without even trying. He was always there for her. Always loved her. Even in his newfound leadership, she was still his number one. "Thank you." She said softly to him, soft purrs rumbling from deep within her chest. "You have been everything to me. I'm happy to be your chosen one, and these kits will be my greatest treasures. I will do everything I can to be the mother they need, just as you have been everything I've needed in a mate."
