The air was humid and sticky and smelled of rain that hadn’t arrived yet. It made his pelt uncomfortable and he peeled himself from the pile of siblings he’d been curled up against, pausing to relish the sensation as a breeze ruffled his fur. Sleep usually came easily to him, especially when it was this warm out. But not tonight. Not for the past moon. [break][break]
Lichenstrike shifted, sitting upright and blinking lazily. He waited with little expectation for his muscles to slacken and the last remnants of some dream to wash over him, and when it didn’t happen a sigh slipped from between his teeth. Honey-colored eyes focused on the forms around him. Pelts he could pick out and scents he knew by heart, family and the occasional friend and strangers. The creases in his expression softened as he spotted Wrenwhisper. He watched closely for the gentle rise and fall of her shoulders as she breathed, the simple motion enough to reassure him.[break][break]
A light flashed in the sky. The tom’s ears pricked, and he waited as the heartbeats ticked by. One, two, three… He was up to six by the time a satisfying rumble of thunder echoed in the distance like a low growl. The energy made his spine tingle.[break][break]
If he wasn’t going to sleep anyways, there was no reason to pass the time here- not when the sky was putting on a show. Lichenstrike rose, standing with a casual stretch as he cast his gaze over towards a couple of camp guards. Though it didn’t qualify as sneaking out now that he was a warrior, old habits died hard, and he padded out of camp around the back of the nursery, the same route he used to always take.[break][break]
Free of the confines of camp, he broke into a run. The grasses flattened with the occasional gust of wind and he felt like it was racing it and losing, paws thudding against the earth as quickly as his heart was beating and yet still it was pulling him along. The clouds hung low in the sky, grey and dense and claustrophobic, and as he crested another hill the young warrior thought he might hit his head against them. Was that why the other Clans were so slow? Why tolerate a canopy of trees when you could have the open sky? [break][break]
Another flash lit up the moors, bright as day for an instant, and Lichenstrike could make out the silhouette of outlook rock. Now there’s an idea. He turned, slowing his sprint to a jog as he approached, and then to a walk as he climbed the jutting rock face.[break][break]
Lichenstrike gulped down some much-needed air as he flopped gracelessly, tail and paws hanging over the edge of the rock as he trained his gaze on the sky. It might turn miserable if it started to rain, but for now the clouds held back as another low crack rang out. He settled in, finding a comfortable position as he watched, feeling small and insignificant and alone in the face of the storm, which was somehow exactly what he needed.

He couldn't sleep, he'd barely eaten for the last moon. Everything had been turned upside down since Emberstar became leader and then Viperstar after him. He didn't feel comfortable with Viperstar as leader of Windclan. The tom had sided with the tyrant leader for long enough that Lionthroat didn't trust him. It didn't matter what Redelm had told him about his former mentor. He worried for his brother, who he feared was too close to the tiny tom. He was having a hard time just thinking about it.

His eyes trailed to where his brother slept. There was an empty space beside him where Lionthroat normally laid beside him. He loved his brothers dearly. They'd always been important to him and despite all his attempts at convincing Redelm to trust Viperstar less, the red tom wouldn't even think about it. But it had come to a point where Lionthroat would rather keep his relationship with his brother than continue to fight with him and lose their brotherly connection.

A movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention and he saw Lichenstrike step out of the group that was his brothers and sisters, and ended up outside the camp. Lionthroat decided to follow him. Though he wasn't as fast as the tall and thin tom, he could certainly track him to wherever he was going.

Lionthroat stood and followed after him, going at his own pace rather than trying to catch up. He listened to his nose as he followed Lichenstrike across the moors. When he found him at outlook rock, Lionthroat began to climb to the top. He wasn't quiet with his presence because he didn't want to startle his best friend, but when he reached the peak, He sat beside him and peered up at the sky with bright amber eyes. The thunder rumbling in the distance as they sat together on outlook rock.

There were pawsteps behind him- his ears rotated to catch the sound- but with the wind blowing in his face no scent to suggest who. Lichenstrike didn’t move. He only just found the energy to wonder who it could be. His first thought: someone to fuss at him, warn him that he shouldn’t be out alone. His second thought that it might be one of Emberstar’s followers come to finish the job; one of his brothers even. A strange apathy accompanied it. [break][break]
The thunder rolled. [break][break]
“I found you.” The words were simple but they made his heart leap into his throat as he recognized the voice. Ginger fur appeared in his peripheral vision and Lichenstrike couldn’t help but sheepishly note how bright Lionthroat seemed even on a stormy, starless night. [break][break]
“Here I am.” He swept his tail with a flourish. The words and the flair for dramatics came naturally but felt weird on his lips on a night like this. He let his tail fall limply to his side once more. [break][break]
“If anyone else asks, I was keeping lookout.” Had it been anyone else that had showed up, that was the excuse he had prepared. But he had no excuses for Lionthroat. For as long as the toms had known each other, Lichenstrike knew he’d see right through any pretense, even if he wanted to try. “Couldn’t sleep. And I figured, well, what are the chances we get another storm like this for a while.” Lichenstrike lifted a paw to gesture broadly to the sky, and as if the clouds were eavesdropping another bolt of lightning leapt between them. The timing made him grin widely for a moment, and as it faded he twisted to get a better look of his companion. He'd come out here to be alone- but he couldn't bring himself to question Lionthroat's presence. [break][break]
“What about you? And don't say you're only out here for me,” he half-laughed.

"Here I am." said the white and tabby tom in a dramatic voice that held a minute air of something else. Something that Lionthroat couldn't pick out. He couldn't help thinking that there might be something wrong. He seemed... subdued. The large orange tom shifted his stance, began to purr softly, and lowered his head down to groom his friend for a few moments. Then he stepped aside, settled down beside the tom who was his closest ally and hung his legs off the rock, their backs touching. Lionthroat continued to purr in a warm and comforting way, contrasting the low crack of the storm that was approaching. For a long time, he didn't speak or respond. All he wanted was to share a moment with his friend.

"No..." he rumbled in his low voice. "I came here for me." In fact, he had come for himself. He felt selfish for wanting to spend all his time with the other tom, but it wasn't easy to reconcile within his mind. He thought about Lichenstrike so much that it was hardly worth lying about it. And he'd thought about Lichenstrike for longer than he could even remember. From day one the smaller tom was his friend, and they grew closer and closer every day.

There was a long moment of silence as Lionthroat stretched out beside him, pelt brushing his own as their backs pressed together. Lichenstrike turned his gaze skyward again, hazel eyes pretending to study the dark painted colors of the clouds, but his mind wandered. Starless, moonless, bruise-like clouds. Where were they those past moons? If he were any younger, he would have been convinced that the world was ending. [break][break]
Even now he had half a mind that it was. Though it struck him as a cruel sort of irony, to wipe them all out with a storm only after they sorted out the mess that was the past several moons.[break][break]
The thought made his breath hitch and throat close up. Tears gathered in his eyes, but he blinked them away furiously before Lionthroat could see. After moons of surviving and numbness he just wanted to kick and scream and cry at the sky. Instead he focused on the sensation of the cold rock underneath him and the rumble that reached him from the other tom’s chest. He couldn't tell if the heartbeat in his ears was his own or the tom's but he let the sound fill his mind as he closed his eyes. At least he still had this. They hadn't lost this. [break][break]
His voice dropped, barely loud enough to avoid being drowned out by the wind. “I’ve been listening to you protest him” - he wouldn’t dignify Emberstar with a name or title - “ every chance you got. Nothing about that was selfish.” Every chance, even the ones Lichenstrike couldn’t take, for fear of his father and fear of the harm that might come to his mother and younger siblings. It was a special kind of bravery that he admired.

A smile spread on the large tom's maw and he simply continued to purr, giving his all into comforting the other with a healing vibration. Lichenstrike was hurting. All of them lost something to Emberstar, but Lichenstrike and his mother were betrayed by an emotionally and physically abusive father. One that Lionthroat wanted desperately to kill with his own four paws if it wasn't for his sense of pride and dignity.

There was a silence that led after that as Lionthroat's purr began to fade under the crack of the thunder above them. He let out a soft sigh and then wrapped his large body around Lichenstrike's and bumped his forehead against that of the one he knew he loved most dearly.

"I would give my life for you, Lichenstrike. But if you will it, I will give my life to you, instead. I never want to live without you. I never want to be without you. And I will fight for you until my soul is taken from me for the last time." The pledge came from a heart filled with both fear and a deep sense of joy. He could never lose his best friend, and he would do everything he could to protect him and his family, even if that meant becoming the leader of Windclan himself. "I will pledge my self to you." He whispered the last part gently, barely heard above the voice in the sky.

He hadn’t realized how Lionthroat’s comforting purr had filled the space between them until it stopped. The silence, once welcome when he was alone, made Lichenstrike’s skin prickle under his pelt. He kept his eyes closed as he counted the heartbeats, wondering if he should break it.[break][break]
“I would give my life for you, Lichenstrike.” The tom’s head lifted sharply at the words. Lichenstrike’s amber eyes searched Lionthroat’s own as he continued. The tips of his ears burned. His heart hammered, louder than the cracks in the sky above them. [break][break]
He let Lionthroat finish. He was holding his breath, judging by the burning pressure quickly building in his chest- but he was too lost in his thoughts. Everything his friend had said- everything- was all he ever wanted to hear and more. [break][break]
But something about it scared him. Not that exciting, butterflies-in-your-stomach type of thrill. It was dread, sinking its claws into his shoulders and dragging down his back. Those words kept echoing in his ears: I will fight for you until my soul is taken from me. The mere thought was a stab to his heart. He couldn’t lose Lionthroat, and Lichenstrike couldn’t bear the idea that he might be the reason one day. [break][break]
It was a long moment of his own before he figured out what he wanted to say. [break][break]

He couldn't help but chuckle as he added, “And besides, I’m the selfish one. Know that if you dare try to leave for StarClan before I do, I’ll pull you back down here myself and chew you out.”

Unlike Lichenstrike, Lionthroat was comfortable in the silence that had come from his friend after he'd said his little schpeel. He knew he'd said something that would need some thought. He knew that his friend needed time to sort through the words he'd spoken. So he waited.

“i don’t want your life, lionthroat. there’s a lot more good in windclan you can do with it than wasting it on me.” Lionthroat frowned a little bit and was about to say something when Lichenstrike continued. “i just want… you.” The large tom's heart began to pound at that one little sentence. His whole body shivered and then their faces were so close that Lionthroat could hardly breathe. He loved the smaller tom. Not just loved, adored him. And there was nothing that was going to stand in his way to protecting and caring for him.

“i want to be there to support you and see you thrive. i want to be by your side, for as long as you'll have me.” The large red tom shook his head softly, keeping their foreheads together as close as he possibly could.
